For the last 40 to 50 years, India has been exporting iron ore to various Japanese corporations like Sumitomo,  Kwaso,  Nippon Steel from Goa. The Goan iron mining industry is one of the oldest in the country.

Starting 2003, the iron ore industry in India has seen unprecedented rate of growth - both in the mining and export segments. Most of the growth in iron ore industry in India, and even world-wide, can be attributed to the upsurge in Chinese steel industry.
